Festival of Nations
festival of nation a.k.a. FON was held by MUOSS (melbourne university overseas student society). it was an event where various kinds of international foods were sold by different stalls. IMSS was one of the 22 stalls -- we were raising money for I-games, our next HUGE event. the process of this whole FON thing was kinda complicated. we have to hand in our application form to MUOSS, paid for the deposit and application fee (no doubt, paper work is secretary's work but i dunno why i ended up attending the briefing and moving almost my whole kitchen to school :D), we even had to write down in details how foods will be prepared, stored, cooking utensils needed, wattage and all those kinda 'kreb'. after we were chosen, we were called to a briefing when we were told of the food handling procedure. this is the 'fun' part! firstly, EVERYTHING had to be done in the union kitchen or a registered kitchen -- meaning no preparation at home. we had to cut our cucumber and carrot, cook our porridge, boil our noodles..... everything at school. 2ndly, hot foods had to be kept above 65 degree celcius, cooking food above 95 degree celcius and cool food below 6 celcius. and u know what? they actually came to check ur temperature and jotted them down almost every hour ==" i am SERIOUS, they had this electronic thermometer with long detector that was used especially for food tempt recording, and ALCOHOL SWAP to clean the metal detector every now and then. very hygienic huh? besides, people who handle food had to wear gloves all the time and we were asked to wash our hands as frequent as possible. the organizer said, "whenever u are uncertain whether u have to wash ur hand or not, WASH THEM!" this sounds very much like my tutor at clinical school. we were told to wash our hands all the time too, i.e. before u enter the ward, before u examine the patient and after u examine the patient, but the only different is that we have this alcohol base solution for our hand washing where we dun have to use any detergent and rinse off *pretty cool* a bit side tracked, but yeah, people who handle food cannot touch the money, and we had to have our head/hair covered with 'shower cap' when we were at the kitchen. luckily i brought along a scarf with me so i din have to use the transparent over size shower cap :P what else? we were not allowed to wear any jewelleries, bracelet, had to have our hair tied, wear covered shoes and no loose clothing as well......... it was kinda strict but well, we were serving food and food contamination can be a main pathway of disease/infection spreading so yea, we have to watch out or we will be SUED.
*****fast forward to FON cause i haven showered yet and it's already 11.15 p.m. mom's going to kill me ******
